About the city of Faro:
The municipality of Faro is bounded to the south by the Ria Formosa, a lagoon system 19 km long, whose barrier islands communicate with the sea through six sea bars, five of which are natural and mobile, and one is an artificial bar that has been opened to allow easy access to the port of Faro. This lagoon system forms three main islands to which you can reach by boat, being excellent places to enjoy pleasant days in contact with nature, on boat trips, by bike or on foot.
The local gastronomy, the white sandy beaches and mild waters awarded with the 'blue flag', some of the places inhabited only by migratory birds, are aspects to discover in the islands of the Ria Formosa, place with high potential for nature tourism.
As an ancient city, Faro must be (re)discovered. Of pre-Roman origin, known at the time as Ossónoba, Faro was one of the most important urban centers in the south of the Iberian Peninsula. The city features Arab and Roman ruins, but most of the oldest buildings were built after the disastrous earthquake of 1755. Particularly attractive is the old part of town, still surrounded by the walls of Roman origin dating back to the first centuries of our Era.
Currently, due to its central role and as regional capital, Faro has important infrastructure and public services for the region. At the airport more than five million tourists pass per year, the University is known internationally in the areas of marine sciences, tourism management and biotechnology, in addition to the Central Regional Hospital and six secondary schools that demonstrate the central role of the city of Faro in the region.
The city also has an attractive marina, well-maintained parks and squares and the old town full of outdoor cafes and pedestrian areas. In addition to its museums and beautiful churches and chapels, Faro also boasts a vibrant nightlife.
